RNLI to take on lifeguarding in Penwith
26/10/2007

The RNLI will take over the lifeguard service in Penwith next Summer after the council met on Wednesday to agree terms. The charity’s comprehensive training programme and technical resources will improve the existing service on 15 beaches in the district.
John Broad, RNLI Deputy Divisional Inspector for Lifeguards, says: ‘By taking over the lifeguard service in Penwith, the RNLI lifeguards will be able to work alongside the local RNLI lifeboats and volunteer crews from Penlee, Sennen Cove and St Ives to help provide a joined-up service from the beach to the open sea.
‘We will use our knowledge and expertise as a world-class life saving organisation to enhance the existing lifeguard service provided by the council. RNLI lifeguards undergo an intensive induction and training programme to prepare them for every foreseeable incident. It includes training as first responders and all RNLI beaches are equipped with defibrillators. These skills and training are backed by specialised rescue equipment and technical support. In addition, all beaches in Penwith will be manned by at least two lifeguards, to ensure sufficient safety cover and rest periods for the lifeguards.’
