Lifeguards come from many walks of life. Most are employed on a seasonal basis and others are volunteers meaning that they work without getting paid. Lifeguards have to undergo fitness and rescue training every day so that when they patrol the beaches they are ready for an emergency situation at any time. In rescue situations, the lifeguards are able to link up with the lifeboats effectively to assist more people who are in trouble close to the shore. Did you know that RNLI Lifeguards assisted 9,883 people during the summer season of 2007?
